Inflammation and vagus massage: separating research from claims

Discussion of the vagus nerve and inflammation does not establish that massage treats inflammatory disease. Here is how to assess the distinction.

A mechanism is not a treatment result

A possible biological explanation does not tell us whether a particular treatment helps people with a particular condition. The method and relevant outcomes need to be studied directly. General discussion of the nervous system is therefore not evidence that a gentle massage reduces inflammation throughout the body. Ask what was actually measured rather than relying on a persuasive explanation.

Massage and medical stimulation differ

Studies of electrical nerve stimulation use particular devices, settings and patient groups. They are not studies of a hands-on well-being session. A shared word in the name does not make the methods interchangeable. Before accepting a research claim, check that it concerns the service you are considering, rather than a different medical procedure.

If you have an inflammatory condition

Follow the plan agreed with your clinician. Massage must not replace medication, monitoring or assessment of new symptoms. Mention your condition and areas that are painful, swollen or otherwise affected. Adapting or postponing the visit may be appropriate. We do not promise changes in blood tests, immune function or disease activity as a result of a session.

A clear purpose for well-being

If massage is appropriate for you, the aim may simply be comfortable rest. That is a valid preference without explanations about detoxification or healing inflammation. Judge the experience by comfort and your own wishes. Questions about what is suitable with your condition belong with your treating clinician. Our role is to describe the appointment honestly, explain the available adaptations and respect your decision about whether to attend.
